Shock as Government Supporters Take Over Hungary's Most-Read Daily Publication

Journalists at Hungary's most-read publication have voiced surprise after a media group viewed as friendly to PM Viktor Orbán's party, Fidesz, purchased the tabloid from its previous Swiss owners.

Timing of Purchase

The purchase, which coincides with Hungary approaches pivotal elections next year, is generally viewed as another effort to expand government influence on the news outlets.

A government-aligned media group, Indamedia, stated on Friday it had purchased a portfolio of Hungarian media assets, including the fashion publication and Blikk, a widely-read tabloid whose news site attracts approximately three million web users monthly.

Leadership Changes

Blikk's departing editor-in-chief, Ivan Zolt Nagy, announced on Monday that he and another key leader were leaving in "mutual agreement" with the new owner.

They had been hired seven months ago to restructure Blikk, "focusing not on sensationalism but on engaging content" and to be "more public-oriented, reporting on politics, economic matters, and culture," he stated on Facebook.

Employee Responses

Workers from Blikk expressed being shocked. "I almost had a medical emergency when I heard the announcement," remarked one journalist, who wished to be anonymous. "For me, this is morally unacceptable."

Blikk has announced a fresh chief editor, Baláz Kolossváry.

Media Landscape Issues

Many journalists who have decided to stay admit being in a challenging situation as there are few other publications remaining where they could look for work.

Over the past 15 years, Orbán has been able to use a extensive state-aligned press environment to strengthen his public perception and poll numbers.

Political Timing

While major media transactions have typically occurred either after elections or during a quiet political period, the acquisition of Ringier Hungary occurs less than six months before April's national vote.

Blikk was viewed as a key objective for Orbán and his party at a period when polls are indicating that they have a real challenger for the initial occasion in over a decade.

Political Rival Response

The opposition leader, Péter Magyar, whose Respect and Freedom political group is campaigning on promises to root out deep-seated corruption, has been vocal about Orbán's "information apparatus" and the harm he asserts it has done to Hungary's democratic system.

He has criticised the Ringier Hungary acquisition, declaring it constitutes another attempt by Orbán to cement his control over Hungary's media outlets.

Publication's Importance

Though Blikk is a daily publication, famous for its gossip column and sensational captions, in the recent years it has also run many pieces on alleged corruption.

"The publication represents by far the most popular daily newspaper in Hungary, a sector dominator," said a communications specialist. "The web version has become surprisingly popular in recent years, becoming the fourth most read website in Hungary. If propaganda appears in such extensively consumed and mainstream outlets, it will have an effect on the public."

Global Perspective

For more than a ten-year period, Hungary has functioned as a blueprint for other "semi-democratic systems" globally.

Previous US leaders and their associates have frequently applauded Orbán's Hungary even as it plunges in media freedom indexes.

In 2022, Orbán spoke to a conference of US right-leaning politicians that the route to leadership required "having their own media."

Historical Press Regulation

In 2010, Orbán's regime passed a law that established official oversight over the chief communications authority and put the public broadcaster in the management of loyalists.

Proprietorship Information

Indamedia is 50% owned by Mikló Vaszily, a government-supporting entrepreneur who is also chief executive of a state-aligned TV network.

In a announcement, Indamedia's second proprietor and CEO, Gábor Ziegler, said: "Through the acquisition of Ringier Hungary, the organization is gaining a well-performing press organization of similar size to Indamedia, with strong market positions and successful brands that serve a crucial function in the Hungarian communications sector."

Ringier said in a release that its decision to sell was "motivated entirely by business strategy factors and our emphasis on our primary online operations in Hungary."

A state communicator was contacted for comment.
