The Year 2026 Declared the Year of the Croaking Craze.
My key observation from the recent Day of the Devs showcase was undoubtedly entertaining, my main revelation was a personal epiphany: I am convinced that 2026 will be the unrivaled era for frogs in video games.
Exactly five of the showcased games—Frog Sqwad, Stretchmancer, Unshine Arcade, Awaysis, and Big Hops—incorporate these hoppy characters. Considering a band of frogs is termed an army, it seems they are staking their claim.
The Enduring Appeal of Amphibians
Frogs are anything but new to the interactive entertainment. Looking back at titles like Frogger to the coveted froggy chair in Animal Crossing, they have long held a cult following. But, their popularity has markedly exploded in recent times.
A quick search for "frog game" on Steam unveils an overwhelming flood of results. Although, some of these are low-budget titles, a sizable number are legitimate amphibian adventures.
Charting the Croak Comeback
To quantify this trend, I conducted a detailed review into the last half-decade of hoppy gaming on Steam. My criteria was somewhat arbitrary, counting games with frogs in the title or clearly visible in screenshots.
The data paint a clear picture: a steady uptick from less than 20 titles in 2020 to almost 60 in 2025.
This notable escalation prompts the question: where is this interest coming from? The frog's elevated place in the cultural zeitgeist is somewhat apparent elsewhere, such as the resurgence of Frog and Toad as nostalgic figures. Yet, the wave in gaming looks uniquely pronounced.
Designing for a Sticky Tongue
Frankly, this is a shift I can wholeheartedly support. Frogs have inherent creative potential for game developers.
- Charming Creatures: They are ideally shaped to be designed as quirky characters that often become a highlight in any game.
- Innovative Systems: Their stretchy limbs and grappling abilities facilitate a myriad of creative gameplay ideas.
A number of the announced projects clearly utilize these traits. For instance the tongue-based traversal in Big Hops and the stretchy arm puzzles of Stretchmancer.
What the Future Holds
So, what is the outlook for 2026? With five frog games publicly revealed before the year has officially commenced—and the possibility for more—the evidence suggests for it to be the largest year for amphibian gaming.
When these games are received positively—and traditionally, games from this showcase have a strong track record—we may indeed be witnessing a full-blown croaking cultural moment.
