The UK authorities has added an additional eleven further countries to its official advisory roster regarding the threats of industrial alcohol poisoning from contaminated beverages.

This expanded warning features Bangladesh, India, Iran, Jordan, Libya, Malawi, Malaysia, Morocco, Nepal, Papua New Guinea, and Rwanda following reports of "a global increase in the number of documented incidents" of toxic alcohol poisoning.

Just a few weeks ago, the government had earlier included Ecuador, Japan, Kenya, Mexico, Nigeria, Peru, Russia, and Uganda to the existing list, after a number of high-profile incidents like the deadly demise of 6 tourists in Laos in 2024.

Travellers are being cautions that even tiny quantities of methanol can cause vision loss or death within twelve to forty-eight hours.

Exactly what is Toxic Alcohol and How is it Used?

Toxic alcohol is a harmful industrial alcohol commonly used in coolant, windscreen washer fluid, and paint solvent. This chemical is not intended for ingestion.

Although it is inherently formed during the production of spirits, commercial firms lower it to minimal, harmless amounts for drinking through the refining procedure.

But in various destinations, it is illegally mixed into beverages to save money, and as it is tasteless and scentless, it is extremely challenging to identify.

Government Recommendations for Travelers

Authorities representative the minister stated that every traveler should be aware of the signs of methanol toxicity.

"If you're having drinks overseas, choose reputable establishments and steer clear of homemade alcohol or unspecified beverages," the minister said.

"Should anything feels off, such as a fatigue that's way worse than usual or blurred eyesight – seek medical attention immediately."

The complete roster of nations noted as presenting a danger of toxic alcohol poisoning currently features: Brazil, Bangladesh, Cambodia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Fiji, India, Indonesia, Iran, Jordan, Kenya, Laos, Libya, Malawi, Malaysia, Mexico, Morocco, Nepal, Nigeria, Papua New Guinea, Peru, Russia, Rwanda, Thailand, Turkey, Uganda, and Vietnam.
